I decided to travel to Borneo because I desperately wanted to see the Wild Men of Borneo, also known as orang-utans. After completing my travel research of Borneo, I learned that there was a whole lot more to see there.
The caves and the thick jungles interested me, as well as it's history of head hunters. There really isn't a lot of information on Borneo, which intrigued me even more. I have never wanted to travel to places that most people want to go to.
Borneo is primitive, hot and humid, with tons of snakes and bugs. It is rough terrain to hike. I wish I had spent more time there and had camped out. |
| Me and the Iban Tribe Chief |
| | Mingle with the local people of Borneo Borneo is known for it's headhunters. Years ago headhunting was the common practice throughout Borneo, although it really isn't practiced anymore. Supposedly they stopped about 50 years ago.... Shrunken heads can still be found hanging in people's homes.
The names of the trails in the Mulu area are named after the headhunting raids of different villages. You can hike the old Headhunter's Trail that still exists.
The people still live in longhouses along the rivers. The Penan Settlement is easily reachable by river from Mulu where I visited the Iban Tribe. The Iban Chief came out to welcome me and let me hold his axe for photos. Although still primitive and self sufficient, the people are now wearing western clothes.
The Iban and other tribes hunt for most of their food and use dug out canoes for traveling along the rivers. When you visit the longhouses, you can watch them digging out the canoes and spend some time with the villagers.
I was lucky enough to have one of the Iban ladies teach me how to play the flute that she had made, with my nose...... |
