Things To Do: Science is fun at the MTN Sciencentre

This has occupied us for hours on a rainy day. The kids can explore all sorts of science and technology: stand in a gyroscope, speak across the enormous hall using satellite dishes to focus your voice, look at a camera obscura, solve brain teasers and puzzles, and construct buildings out of foam bricks. The shop has some wonderful scientific toys ranging from very cheap and simple to the rather more expensive and complex. The Sciencentre is in the Century City shopping centre, which means that there is plenty of (fast) food around.

Things To Do: Sea Point Maze and Putt Putt

The Sea Point promenade is about 3km long, and it has wide open paths to jog or walk on, plus some more formal diversions like the Serendipity maze - the 3rd largest in the world, 2 putt putt courses, a public swimming pool, and a bright red and white lighthouse at Mouille Point. The maze has a few entrances, and it is quite fun to see where all the different people in your group meet up. It is constructed out of hedges, some of which are growing vigorously and others are battling against the sea winds and sandy soil. The owner of the Serendipity maze is quite a character: he will share his poetry with you if you are interested. He writes it for his children who are overseas.

Things To Do: Monkeys at World of Birds at Hout Bay

The World of Birds has over 3000 birds (according to their web site), but more animals too: the monkeys are wonderful. The walk-through squirrel monkey cage can send you into endless giggles. They will steal anything not zipped into a bag, and climb all over you. They can bite too! This is a fun experience to do with children. There is a sit-down cafe, and a place to buy drinks, but do not take the food with you into the monkey cage. They also advertise that you can bring your own picnic. You can buy trinkets and t-shirts at their shop.
