Dome in El Capitolio
Modelled after the Capital Building in Washington DC, I decided to take a self-guided tour of the building this trip.
It is very similar to the DC building, but subtle differences. More monuments to Jose Marti etc and of course, Cuban historians. It is a magnificent building inside and I enjoyed seeing it.
The highlight was making a new friend though. A lovely lady that hands out the toilet paper in the ladies' washrooms, we started talking, about her, her family. etc. I took her photo and sent it back to her.
The joy I get from being in Cuba is talking to people and connecting.
Unique Suggestions: As you enter this beautiful building, there is are amazing statues at the top of the steps and inside the main entrance, art galleries, a library, and the wings of the building used to house Senate and Chamber of House of Representatives, but now are offices of Plaza de la Revolucion.
Fun Alternatives: There many historical buildings in this area, El Prado, the promenade, just walk down it and look around you. Tree lined and benches to sit on and people watch.
Or walk up the Museum of the Revolucion or Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, as well as the Real Fabrica de Tabacos La Corona (cigar factory)
hole in the wall
Luckily this buildling is being restored, but crumbling buildings with rubble on the sidewalks are everywhere in this beautiful city.
from the Malecon, you can clearly see this castle/fort. I did not go inside (as I have been to El Morro in Santiago de Cuba) and they seem to be similar, but if you have not seen either fort, do check it out.
I was using my telephoto lens for this shot (no digital cameras for me).
Unique Suggestions: I did not go inside the castle, but to make the experence bearable, talk to the people who are guiding you, you may actually learn something.
There is always something to be learned from visiting historical sites, so enjoy the experience and take what you can from it.
El Castillo Havana
It is an amazing sight, to see a fortress from across the water.
Everyone has to go to the Malecon at least once. I found it to be different than the glamorous photos I always see on Cuba websites, but still a neat place.
What struck me were the decaying buildings, but they are being restored now. Yes, I got splashed by the surf, and had a great view of El Castillo.
You cannot see Havana without strolling the Malecon.
Unique Suggestions: I was able to go with friends, as I strolled the Malecon, but didn't get a chance to see it at night, although my casa was not far from there, pity!! Next time.
Fun Alternatives: I suggest you really see the Malecon at night and in the daytime. Check out any local bars along the way. There just isn't enough time in the day to see it all and I wish I had.
Just means I need to get back there.
