***********************
NOTE: ON 24 APRIL 2006 THIS AREA WAS HIT BY CYCLONE MONICA. MOST DAMAGE HAS NOW (2008) BLENDED BACK INTO THE BUSH.
SO, THERE ARE STILL THE TELLTALE SIGNS AROUND, BUT FOR THE MOST PART EVERYTHING IS AS NORMAL.
Kakadu covers an area of around 20,000 square kms comprised of a wide variety of environments, from sandstone plateau, escarpment, tropical woodlands, floodplains, estuaries and coastline.
Although the name Kakadu conjures up notions of wilderness, it does have a population of some 2,000 people and two bitumenised highways. The people are, however, mainly concentrated in the town of Jabiru.
On these pages, as travelogues and tips, I'll take you on a tour of some of the well known and iconic places in Kakadu, as well as some of those that are more remote and little known.
Also I'll include photos of some the smaller and often un-noticed things that can be seen by those with an eye for detail.
So far the tips include the places listed below. If you're only wanting info on a specific site rather than browsing, the links will take you directly to the tips you want (you may have to scroll down the page a bit):
Bowali Visitor Information Centre
Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre
Mamukala Wetlands
Jarrangbarnmi (Koolpin Gorge)
Bilkbilkmi (Graveside Gorge)
Waldak Irmbal (West Alligator Head)
Nawulandja (Little Nourlangie)
Ubirr Art Site

Kakadu is famous for its rock art. This is a sorcery painting along the Bardedjelidji trail.
- Pros:Window to culture and nature
- Cons:need for a lot of time to see it all
- In a nutshell:Don't believe all you hear, see for yourself.
