"Laura, Queensland" Laura by 1+1

Laura Travel Guide: 1 reviews and 8 photos

Laura is a small township at the base of Cape York Peninsula in North Queensland. Although in its heyday in the 1880's it was a major centre for the Palmer River Goldfields, today it is little more than a settlement with pub, police station and a few houses.

It's about 317 kms north of Cairns on the road leading to Lakefield National Park as well as the tip of Cape York Peninsula. The road is unsealed for approximately the last 100 kms to Laura excepting a short section just to the south passing the Split Rock Aboriginal Art Site.

The area has a rich historic heritage, both Aboriginal and European. Numerous rock art sites are scattered through out and there are many relics of the gold rush period of the 1800's.
