Saint Petersburg Warnings Or Dangers
Sort by: Most Recent | Best Rated | Author's Order

Personal Observations: Visa is required
  • Tip Rating:
  • To visit Russia one needs a VISA. Before getting this, one needs a document called "Visa Support Letter" . If you are staying in a Hotel, this is normally supplied by the Hotel itself, however if you are invited at some friends there, this could be a problem.

I was quite sceptical, however I opted to get this document from the internet. Was lucky and I got this document. Costed me USD 30 though

    Personal Observations: Cyrillic alphabet
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is more of a warning. It would help if one could learn some basics of the cryllic alphabet. One will be able to go around the city with more confidence.
I was a bit sceprical about this, when I saw similar warning on VT however, once there, I had to do this and it was very helpful.

    Personal Observations: Traffic
  • Tip Rating:
  • Okay, Traffic is chaotic in St Petersburg, especially the closer you get to the centre of the city.
I was situated in a Hotel in Nevsky prospect and used to see traffic accidents every day.

People drive crazy, especially taxi drivers. Be careful when crossing the road, even if lights are green.

Traffic rules are not adhered to, no one wears seat belts , or helmets (for m/bikes)
Traffic accidents were a daily sight (See photo)

    Personal Observations: Museum entrances
  • Tip Rating:
  • In most touristic places ,there is a seperate entrance fee for foreigners and is much higher than for Russian nationals.

Also in most cases, you have to pay a small extra fee if you need to utilse your photo camera.

Two places which I remember off hand which had this policy where "The Hermitage" and "Church of Spilled Blood"

Personal Observations: Passport & other documents
  • Tip Rating:
  • Due to some old law in Russia, one should always have documentation on him. Hence, I give you an advice to always carry the passport and other important documents with you. You could be stopped in the street by police and asked for it.

I had some problems entering back the hotel on various occassions since I was not carrying the passport.

To avoid loosing the passport, you should carry a photocopy of the document

    Personal Observations: Hotel warning !!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • I noticed that hotels in ST. Petersburg are always full of prostitutes. Probably this tip applies to many other parts of Russia .
Although most of them do not create any disturbance [ well must say that they are pleasing to the eye :) ] , I think it is good to be warned about this.

Most of them just wander around the corridors of the hotel or just hang out in its bars ...
