  • One of the highlights of any trip to Paris is this grand palace. Not only is it totally ***ing cool, but also you can pretend to be a rich stuck up aristocrat if you wish. During the days of Marie Antoinett, even peasants were allowed to come and go into the inner chambers of this place. It was built so you and I could come check out their ***, and make sure they were on the up and up.

I suggest you take a guided tour. I didn’t because it was too expensive at $88.00 per person. So we just took the metro out there and walked around the grounds. I was pissed for a week that I couldn’t go inside. But the tour picks you up in Paris, gives you a guide for the day, and you get to see EVERYTHING. Total time: 8hrs for this tour.

    FACTS:
The Palace of Versailles began as a modest hunting lodge. Well, as modest a lodge as one could expect from a French King. Then Louis XIV enlarged and enrobed the old lodge, turning it into the great Chateau we know today. In 1837, Louis-Philippe converted the whole deal to a museum of French History in what may have been the historic starting point for the development of mass tourism.

Versailles is half an hour by rail from the Gare St. Lazarre station in Paris . The Château is open from Tuesday to Sunday, except on certain French public holidays
    May-September 9 a.m. – 6.30 p.m.
    October-April 9a.m.-5.30p.m

The park and the gardens are open every day except in bad weather from 7 a.m. in summer, 8 a.m. in winter, until sunset.

Lola, I'm glad I met your page... Been living in Paris for 23 years now, and it has started hating me a couple of weeks ago... :-S I just have to find another life to live - consider yourself lucky (and I never spent a night at the Crillon either...)! ;-)
