Mercure Berlin City Ost: Great Value in Friedrichshain
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Satisfaction:
  • Got a twin room in the Mercure City Park Ost for $50 a night. This hotel is in a nice part of town (Friedrichshain) to the east of the center. It is a block or two to the Frankfurter Allee S-Bahn and U-Bahn stations. It is located in a shopping plaza with restaurants, ATMs, and other stores available within the building's courtyard.

The Mercure Berlin City Ost is within easy walking distance of many restaurants and the bars of Simon Dach Strasse. There are many internet cafes and doner shops within easy reach as well.

About five stops on the U-Bahn from the Frankfurter Allee station gets you to the Alexanderplatz and the tv tower. About fifteen minutes on the U-/S-Bahn gets you to Friedrichstrasse or most other central sites.

There is also an underground parking garage attached to the building which cost about 6 euro a day if I remember correctly.

Generator: Neat hostel on the East Side Compare Rates
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • We stayed at the Generator Hostel Berlin for one evening in November 2003. The hostel is a huge buidling right next to the Landsberger Allee S-Bahn station on the Ring line. The interior of the building has a very futuristic/Star Trekkie feel to it. Lots of blue lighting in each section of the hostel.

The front desk staff is very helpful and fluent in English. If they didn't have an answer to a question on hand, they went out of there way to get an answer.

There is internet available for a nominal fee of like 1 Euro for 15 minutes and there are plenty of terminals available.

There is a very cool, blue lit, bar at the hostel with cheap beers and drinks. Lots of tvs tuned either to MTV or soccer in the bar area. There were people of all ages in the bar.

The rooms were very small (we had a twin room), but there were also tons of them. The showers in the rooms with private facilites were also quite small...albeit very clean.

Basic breakfast is available at no charge, while a more substantial meal can be had for a small charge.

There is an ATM nearby and a doner kebab restaurant right around the corner.

The Generator is about 15 mintutes from Alexanderplatz by subway. This place is a good deal, and fun, if you don't mind staying a bit of a distance from all of the action.

Estrel Hotel And Convention Centre: Four Stars??? Compare Rates
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Satisfaction:
  • I stayed at the Estrel for seven days in June 2005 for a conference. The hotel offered four or five different restaurants, a convenience store, a business center, a nightclub, and a Las Vegas style impersonator show. The common areas of the hotel were very nice...the room that I stayed in though, was very basic. Bed, tv, minibar, and a table. The room was on par with your standard Marriott Courtyard here in the US. Notable omissions from the room included a clock, iron, and coffee maker.

The hotel is a bit away from all of the action Berlin has to offer, however, it is less than a block away to the S-Bahn.

Unique Qualities: Very friendly staff, close to trasportation, very clean.

I agree with you regarding the Estrel hotel that I stayed at 3 years ago. It is at best a 4* hotel. Not bad but not worth the hype and $$$. Excellent pictures by the way. Hope to see and read more honest and open travel tips from you!
