We stayed at the Generator Hostel Berlin for one evening in November 2003. The hostel is a huge buidling right next to the Landsberger Allee S-Bahn station on the Ring line. The interior of the building has a very futuristic/Star Trekkie feel to it. Lots of blue lighting in each section of the hostel.
The front desk staff is very helpful and fluent in English. If they didn't have an answer to a question on hand, they went out of there way to get an answer.
There is internet available for a nominal fee of like 1 Euro for 15 minutes and there are plenty of terminals available.
There is a very cool, blue lit, bar at the hostel with cheap beers and drinks. Lots of tvs tuned either to MTV or soccer in the bar area. There were people of all ages in the bar.
The rooms were very small (we had a twin room), but there were also tons of them. The showers in the rooms with private facilites were also quite small...albeit very clean.
Basic breakfast is available at no charge, while a more substantial meal can be had for a small charge.
There is an ATM nearby and a doner kebab restaurant right around the corner.
The Generator is about 15 mintutes from Alexanderplatz by subway. This place is a good deal, and fun, if you don't mind staying a bit of a distance from all of the action.
