FEELING ANTIQUITY

Ephesus

marble road
Ephesus, which was one of the twelve ion cities, developed as a result of the union of the Ion immigrants with the natives living near the temple of Kybele. Afterwards, the spectacular temple built for this goddess who then took the name of the Greek Goddess Artemis, would be famous as one of the seven wonders of the world. Like the other Ionian cities, Ephesus was ruled by Lydia, Persia, Macedonia and lastly by Roman rulers.

This city was one of the most popular cities of the ancient world and was given special attention by many Hellenistic kings. Because the Romans made Ephesus the capital of the Asian State, the city became one of the biggest settlements in Anatolia. The city was an important centre for Christianity at this time.

Owing to its wonderful position and associated ports, Ephesus became Anatolia's biggest trade centre. The Celsus library, the theatre, stadium, gymnasium, the temples and the famous baths are responsible for this city becoming a sports, religious, cultural and entertainment centre especially in Roman times.

The process of excavation and restoration has been doing by Turkish and Austrian archeologists. I was one of them some years ago :-)
The Theatre of Ephesus

The Grand Theatre

Theater Ephesus is one of the biggest and most well-preserved buildings. Also, it is one of the best examples of the Greek-Roman style. It was begun to be constracted in the Hellenistic era, completed in the era of Troian (B.C. 98-117). The audience part of the theater consists of 24.000 seats. Some of theese seats were turn down from their places to be used process of the construction of other buildings.
Terrace houses

Terrace Houses

Since these houses are located in the town center they were obviously occupied by important people. The area is therefore called the "Rich Houses" or "Hillside Palace". Every terrace on the stepped street was a home entrance. All were peristyle (with a small pool in the center) and the rooms were arranged around the pool. Most houses were three-story not higher than 20 or 25 m. Columns were on all sides and the floors were marble. There was running water to the houses, either from a fountain or along the side. In some houses there were even cisterns and wells. Light came in from the open peristyle, but not enough to keep the houses from being dim, since there were no windows. The houses were lighted like the baths were. The floors were mosaic, the walls had frescoes or colored marble. The precious finds from the houses are on display in the Ephesus Museum.

It's a shame when you can't remember if you've given ratings to a page before... Well, if so, you get them again for the antiquity of this place! Great pictures and tips!
