Memorial
After our visit to Tuol sleng we went by road out of the city to the "Killing Fields".
It is a beautiful, tranquil place which has been set aside as a memorial to those who died at the hands of the evil regime.
Allow about 3 hours to visit the palace and pagoda. The grounds are very pleasant to stroll around and the buildings are stupendous to look at. There is no photography allowed inside. See my travelogue for many more photos of the outside.
You need to visit this place to put Cambodia and it's people into perspective. The old school was used by the Khmer Rouge as a torture chamber. Only a handful of people were alive when the prison was liberated. There are many thousands of photographs of those arrested by the regime never to be heard of again.
Can be distressing - I took no photographs as I did not feel comfortable with the idea.
Wat phnom
Wat Phnom is set atop the only hill in town. ascent is via a wide stone staircase. Many local people come here to pray for luck and to make offerings.
At the base of the hill there are many sellers, who will pester the life out of you!
