That's what some woman waiting for the bus yelled at me as she grabbed my purse and pushed this little eight-year-old kid away. He had walked up to me holding out a newspaper (which covered his hands, clue #1). He wouldn't leave me alone as I tried to walk past him. Luckily that woman was there. I just kept walking after she pushed him away, dazed. But he had opened both of the zipper pockets on my purse. Nothing was stolen, thank goodness. Since then I always watch out for little kids and keep my money and credit cards all over the place in my jacket pockets and in my purse. It's really not that bad here, I just should have been paying better attention.

Crossing the street is hazardous even to those of us who have years of practice since we let go of our parents' hands. The best advice I ever got in regards to crossing streets in Rome was "Do as the Romans do." Honestly, if you want to cross in a place where there is no light (and you will) you might be safer if you cross with someone who looks like they know what they're doing. Cars usually stop. But always, always watch out for the Vespas! Yes, those little, loud, zooming things don't stop at the lights if they can help it and they can appear from behind cars and trucks in the blink of an eye.

I love Rome and hope to go back again some day... | ARoman Wed Apr 9, 2003 12:00 UTC Glad you enjoy! But check better on beers... there are good Irish pubs with great Guiness, that is where Italians go for that, plus Moretti or other local ones are not much worse than various Light ones... |
