"Welcome to the Nenets Autonomous Okrug" Naryan-Mar's Profile
Did you know that there is a place in Europe where people live the same manner as their ancestors lived in the 12-13-th centuries? Yes, NOW you know - this is my home-region Nenets autonomous okrug, the place in North-Western part of Russia where - the Nenets - one of the indigenous peoples lives. Of course you have a question - "What for does he need it - to make a page about his region?" I have several reasons: First -I think it's not a real pleasure to have something and not to share it with other people. So, I have this experience of life here and I want to share it with everybody who needs - just to feel myself well. (Thanks a lot to VT's creators for the possibility). Secondly - I think there are some people (from times of Cold War) who think that Russia is an enemy-country with vicious people. My wish is to wash up their eyes. And the last - I like more people coming to our region just to learn more about the world where I live.
You as a wise person surely know that money cost nothing without the ability to spend them. And a travel is the only thing which gives us a FEELING OF FREEDOM AND NEW EXPERIENCES , while all the material things (flats, cars, diamonds etc.) just makes us slaves of these things. So, TRAVEL! And feel the WORLD! In some places of our planet you still can feel the REAL LIFE which has not changed since people lived without passports. One of such places is my home-region, where I'm pleased to invite you. That would be a really fantastic trip for you, and I say it not like a man from any tourist company, but like a person who was born and raised on this land. Here and after I will help you to find all necessary information about the region and if you need any additional data, just send me e-mail. That will be your first step to break the border!!! (See my motto on the top of this page)
Russia is huge! That's true. My home-region is just a small one of 89 Russian regions, but it has an area of 176 810 sq. km. Population's density of it is just about 0,23 person per 1 sq.km!!! Half of the population lives in the only town - NARYAN-MAR, other big part of the population - in several small settlements along the Pechora river. It runs from the Ural mountains to the Arctic Ocean, dividing the region in two almost equal parts. All the others live in some remote places all around the region. Main nationality in the region is Russian, but there are also about 9 000 of Nenets (just 50 000 of the Nenets live all around the globe) and about 10 000 of Komi people. Today most of the Nenets live in tundra like their ancient ancestors. They are still involved in reindeer-breeding, hunting and fishing, which makes them nomads of the tundra traveling to south (in winter) and to north - to the coast of the Barents Sea (during summer). Tundra is their real home. During the migrations they live in CHUM - a very specific mobile house made of wooden poles and covered by reindeers' skins. Here I enclose a picture of summer version of chum. The Nenets okrug is one of the most prosperous regions in Russia. It's all because of its hydrocarbonaceous resources. There are billions tones of oil hidden in the tundra's bowels and all other available treasures (gas, gold, diamonds etc.). That's why oil-companies work very actively at the local deposits and sell oil to the western markets. But of course this is not very good for the Nenets reindeers and their owners, as they use this land for reindeer-breeding and this is their traditional life-style, not simply an industry. And one day they will have no land to graze their reindeers at all. It's pity but this is a modern reality. That is the way industry destroys the ancient lifestyle. Nenets and other northern people (as well as Russians living on the North) are very friendly and you can see it yourselves if come here. Those who live in tundra don't like to speak much, but their hearts are open to guests.
People living in the Nenets okrug call the rest world - "Big land" (Boljshaja zemlja) because it's far away from here. There are no railways and automobiles roads from the Nenets okrug. The most popular way to come to Naryan-Mar is plane. We have regular flights to-from Naryan-Mar - Saint-Petersburg, and daily Naryan-Mar-Arkhangelsk-Moscow flights. It will take you about 3 hours to get by TUPOLEV-134 from Naryan-Mar to Moscow with one stop in Arkhangelsk. Air companies to choose - Aeroflot-Nord and during the summer some other like Pulkovo, Komiinteravia etc. Tickets are rather expensive for Russian citizens but not for people living in Naryan-Mar that's why there are often no tickets available. During the summer - holiday season - we have more often flights, to more destinations. Other kind of summer transport is Pechora river - by passenger boat to Sheljajur (Komi Republic) or sea cargo vessels to Arkhangelsk. To Komi you can get in 8 hours and from Arkhangelsk cargo arrives in 2-3 days via the White and the Barents seas. We have also winter automobile road from Naryan-Mar to Usinsk (Komi Republic) but I would not recommend you to use it just if you are not a kamikaze. It's not a big pleasure to spend 12 hours (optimistic scenario) being jolted inside Russian lorry. For the local destinations we use helicopters MI-8, ANTONOV-2 planes and snowmobiles. I must to warn everyone that we often have a bad weather (snow storms) especially in March when people sometimes spend one-two weeks in the airport waiting for a flight.
Unfortunately Nenets okrug has not got a very advanced tourist infrastructure, so I don't recommend to come here those who always stays at 4-5 stars hotels. There are two hotels - "PECHORA" (65 beds), and "ZAPOLJARNAJA STOLITSA" (about 45 beds) in Naryan-Mar so there are often no places available. At the same time hotel rates are rather high - from 40 to 1200 USD per night. Recently PECHORA was refurbished and got new categories of rooms, such as VIP-luxery, Presidential appartments etc. Additionally there are some other hotels but they all belongs to different oil companies and just for VIPs.
Traditional souvenirs to bring from the Nenets okrug are handmade stuff produced of reindeer skin, horns and fur, also hats of polar fox fur and traditional Nenets footwear - "burki". All these are produced mainly by private craftsmen.
Now in the early April it's already warm - about -1C up to +3C.
Look at my album "For those who likes night pictures" to see more. I hope to find time to place here more pictures later on.
Nenets okrug is just starting to establish tourist infrastruture. Most of the interesting things to see here relate to its nature. There are also some historical places, like ancient townside Pustoozersk.
Look at my album "Reindeer race" to see more.
Here you'll find updating stories about customs and traditions of the Nenets
In the Nenets language every month has its own name or even names. For example they call October - "Nertej Han Irij" (till October 20) and "Khor Irij" then. First name means - Month of first frosts It's because in October strong western winds bring snow and frosts to our region, covering land with white coverlet and ice. The second name October - Khor Irij says of Khors – reindeer males because after October 20 the period of reproducing begins. Males of reindeers begin to fight with each others and the winner resound the tundra with load calls.
