A group of us, having just eaten at Sushi Samba, went on recommendation of Ramon, to a bar/karaoke place, called 'Lucky Chengs'. It's located on the lower East Side, nr 2nd Ave. I believe. Free to get in, drinks are cheap and there's Karaoke until late. To watch is free, to sing it's $3. Plus, the servers, and the DJ are drag Queens. One freaked me out when she offered me a towel to dry my hands on in the toilet. Beware. Most of them look better than us women! Not a bad atmosphere, but not the most friendly either, but if you're in a group, small or large, and are looknig for a fun, cheap way to spend the evening, this is it. Plus you can get food too.

The Cloisters - a museum that is part of the Met, but totally devoted to medieval art and architecture. At Fort Tryon Park in uptown Manhattan. Offers the 7 Unicorn tapestries, which really captivated me. Also offers sculptures, hour prayer books, jewellery, statues, etc. $12 suggested entry for adults, $7 for seniors and students, but this is a suggested price and also allows you entry to the MET museum on the same day, so a bargain. Fantastic location over-looking the Hudson River and well worth the treck. Everything was beautifully displayed and presented and the atmosphere was very serene and calm, a world away from most NY museums. CLOSED ON MONDAYS!!

The Chrysler Building is my favourite in New York, simply because it's so outstanding to look at. When it shines in the sunlight and lights up at night, it's fantastic.

Skating in Central Park. Everyone's seen it on t.v, or in the movies. For $15 you can rent skates and skate as long as you want at the Wollman, the skating rink closest to Central Park's south entrance. You can usually hear the music blaring out from a distance. I had such fun skating, watching David (who's there every week) wiz around, laughing at Ken who was equally as bad as me and hanging onto Ramon and Samantha. You can't beat it for fun, and when evening comes, you can look at the lit up buildings as you skate. It snowed once when I was skating and, without wanting to sound too cliche, it was magical. When you need a break there's an in-expensive cafe, but watch out cos it gets really busy when they re-surface the ice. Hot chocolates cost about $3, pretzels $2, and they do tea, sandwiches, chips, etc.

St Patrick's is located on 5th Avenue and you really can't miss it. Jammed packed full of tourists (I was only adding to the numbers) which ruined the serenity of the place, but nonetheless beautiful. I love that they have an area designated for homeless people. Bad point: apart from the noise and constant clicking of cameras, there's a gift shop. Not that I'm against them, but it seemed kind of naff.

acemj Wed Aug 27, 2003 02:01 UTC Great page, Sophie. You really captured YOUR NY experience, not the cookie-cutter NYC tourist traps. Great page and happy birthday! | Phillylawyer_19107 Wed Aug 6, 2003 10:26 UTC Good tip about the forced donation at the natural history museum. What a weird way to raise money, isn't it? Either make it voluntary or charge regular admission. tsk, tsk. | KaiM Tue Jun 10, 2003 22:34 UTC You´re right bout the street vendors. Got some bagels, too, but preferred the hot dogs. | Hosell Thu May 8, 2003 01:07 UTC Great page and pics, glad you had a great month in NY and maked a lot of friends!! |
