Italyanskaya 12-C - Saint Petersburg

Italyanskaya 12-C

Italyanskaya 12-C: Other Apartment Options

When we first arrived in St. Petersburg, the apartment agent who met us did not have keys to open our apartment. He tried to contact the cleaning lady for a spare set, but we were arriving on the end of a holiday weekend and she was unreachable.

Rather than have us wait, he set us up in another unit in the building next door. This was a higher priced apartment ($95/night during a normal May), viewable on the agency's site. With two bedrooms (two double beds), this would be a great place to share if traveling with friends.

The bathroom was much nicer than the one that we ended up with two days later (but that only goes so far to justify the price. . . :-) ).

Bedroom - Saint Petersburg

Italyanskaya 12: Apartment Rental in St. Petersburg (Part 2)

The unit had one bedroom (double bed), a living room with a pullout sofa (very comfortable), kitchen with washing machine, and bathroom with gas-heated water. It was located on the third floor of the building, with no elevator.

The pullout sofa was a god-send, as the bed is so squeaky that it is not fit to be shared by two people. Other than that, the apartment fit our needs perfectly. Having the kitchen meant we ate our breakfasts in every day ~ a money saver, as well as a relaxing way to start the day.

Italyanskaya 12: Apartment Rental in St. Petersburg

Due to this summer’s celebration of St. Petersburg’s 300th anniversary, I was told that: #1) Hotels would be doubling prices and #2) they were reluctant to confirm bookings as early as I wanted.

Hotel options in St. Petersburg were already slim (by my standards), even more than in Moscow. In order to get something central and of a standard that would meet with my Mom’s approval, prices were high without any “Anniversary” inflation.

Unique Qualities: I turned to apartment rentals and found there were a number available. It was hard to judge reliability (I was doing a lot of the initial investigating and planning before discovering VT), so I ended up going through GoToRussia.com, the company I used for visas.

They have a number of listings on their website and I selected an apartment at Italyanskaya 12, based on its location near “Arts Square” and Nevsky Prospekt. During a normal May, the cost would have been $60 per night. . .this was doubled to $120 in 2003.

Inner Courtyard of Italyanskaya 12 - Saint Petersburg

Inner Courtyard of Italyanskaya 12

Italyanskaya 12: Apartment Rental in St. Petersburg (Part 3)

The apartment building is entered through a driveway on Italyanskaya Ulitsa, several buildings “back” into a central courtyard, which seemed a bit sketchy to us upon arrival. Inside the slightly run-down building, the apartment is clean and spacious. We also quickly got adjusted to the look of the courtyard. . .no safety issues arose.

The location was super. . .there are two grocery stores nearby, lots of restaurants in the area, a subway stop less than a five-minute walk away. Many of the sights are also close by ~ the Russian Museum and the Church on Spilled Blood are the closest.

Unique Qualities: I would definitely recommend this alternative to hotels in St. Petersburg (assuming cost is concern. . .if you have money to spare, there are a couple of beautiful hotels in the core).
