Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius

Favorite thing: The town of Sergiyev Posad is truly dominated by the Trinity Monastery. We took a small walk around the surrounding streets, but there was little else of immediate interest.

Fondest memory: The aesthetics of the monastery were striking ~ the candy-bright colours and the varied architectural styles. It's hard to believe that this kind of lavish decoration can inspire sombre devotion.

St. Sergius

Favorite thing: St. Sergius came from a wealthy family, but as an adult, he renounced his possessions and wealth shortly thereafter and became a monk. He established the monastery of the Holy Trinity in 1340 ~ it's one of forty which he is credited with founding.

The Trinity Monastery is considered one of Russia's most important religious centres. It's located about an hour outside of Moscow. . .and the importance and sheer beauty of the site make a visit worthwhile.
