Today, the QVB is a mall ~ filled with fairly upscale shops and boutiques. I don't recommend it for that reason, but for the beautiful exterior architecture. There are over 20 copper domes topping the building. . .a peek inside is worthwhile as well, as the glass-sectioned ceiling lets in light. The building takes up a full city block and it was originally a produce market. A great deal of money was spent on saving the building in the early 1980s and it re-opened as a shopping centre later in that decade. Sydney's outdoors are so beautiful ~ be careful not to get sucked into shopping. . .a quick detour through the building is all that is necessary.

While you're admiring the Queen Victoria Building, you'll notice this statue at one end (Southern, I think). The statue originally stood in front of the Irish Parliament, but was removed in 1947. . .it disappeared and was eventually located in a small Irish town in the early 80's.

The Sydney Aquarium is amazing ~ I'm a huge fish (and animal) fan and this type of set-up is like catnip to me. You can see sharks, stingrays and vibrant fish in recreated environments ~ all from underwater viewing tunnels which are the next best thing to diving.

Sydney's sister city is Guangdong and this park was a gift (1980's). You can pick up a botanical map near the entrance ~ it details the varied plants and flowers that decorate the park. There are also several pavilions, a waterfall and a sleeping buddha. It's a lovely break. . .not to be missed.

Yes, the legend is pure cheese, but rubbing the nose of Il Porcellino is rumoured to bring good luck. He stands in front of Sydney Hospital and any coins from the fountain are collected by the hospital to fund their expenses. . . The statue is a copy of one in Florence ~ and, yes, I did rub the snout. :-)

I have general reservations about visiting zoos ~ I find them often to be depressing places that cause me upset over the animals' living conditions (an enclosure may be big compared to other zoos, but how does it compare to the animal's natural habitat?). However, I do recognize the great work zoos can contribute in breeding and research. Taronga Zoo has an excellent reputation in this field. . and the setting of the zoo is incredible (habour background wherever you look). See my travelogue for some animal shots ~ I took quite a few.

Bondi Beach is very popular ~ the restaurants and cafes are a bit on the expensive side. The real reason to visit, however, is to enjoy the stretch of golden sand ~ whether you surf, swim, walk or just watch the activity. Our visit was in July, so there weren't many surfers still braving the weather.

Hyde Park contains a couple of fountains, some statuary and a sunken garden as well. It's a lovely place to drop in for a break from city sight-seeing. The Anzac Memorial is also found here ~ it's a striking Art Deco building facing a reflecting pool. You can apparently enter to visit a military museum, but we were enjoying the outdoors too much to bother.

Originally built to house convicts, the Barracks also served as shelter for Irish orphans, lone female immigrants, then later became legal offices and courts. Today, you can tour the interior and view exhibits on the history of the site ~ it makes for a couple of interesting hours.
