Madras (Chennai)

by Canadienne - last update: Apr 9, 2003

Chennai (earlier known as Madras) is the capital of Tamil Nadu. It also seems to be the billboard capital of the country ~ they are seen in every available space.

I didn't really take to Chennai. . .I'm glad it wasn't my introduction to the country (no offence to anyone living there). Coming from Gujarat to this city was a shock ~ suddenly salespeople, touts and beggars were everywhere. The increased humidity in the South seemed to blanket the city in smog. . .and I didn't find much in the city that enticed me to stay longer. The only exception to this was the stunning Kapaleeswarar Temple

Thankfully, the tour used Chennai simply as a start and end point.

Excellent tips and pics about Chennai - 5 stars from Mike Starr - We have a fantastic restaurant called "The Chennai" just 2 mins from where we live in sunny "Barking Town" - Doubt if it is that authentic - see what you think anyway - Mike and Shelley
