  • Koreans are very fond of their mountains and of trekking. . .so, while you shouldn't expect an escape into the solitude of nature (you won't be the only one there). . .you can count on a fantastic break from the city and hectic pace of life.

Walking sticks, water and bandanas are usually available at the entrance to most national parks. . .be prepared to meet and greet random school groups and families. It's all part of the experience ~ and always well-intentioned. :-)

  • While I was teaching in South Korea, I managed to make a number of day and weekend trips to outlying cities and national parks. However, I apparently didn't manage to make any notes that I could refer to years later. . .when I could no longer remember exactly where I had been and what I had seen.

This ceremony ~ which I am 98% certain was a changing of the guard ~ took place in Seoul during my first weeks in the country. It was pure luck that I happened upon it, as I was just in the city to buy supplies for my classes.

  • Having survived a history of invasion, Korea has maintained a distinct identity. In fact, it was once known as the Hermit Kingdom due to it's anti-foreign stance in the 19th century.

It's an appealing place to visit ~ a vibrant and exciting city that still feels safe, clean and comfortable. There are plenty of skyscrapers and far too many cars, but you can still also find traditional neighbourhoods, where it is easy to get lost in small lanes peppered with Buddhist temples.

  • The subway is the best way to get around Seoul. It is easy to read and follow as well as being very inexpensive. Taxis are also cheap, but you need to be able to communicate your destination in Korean and very clearly.

Walking is nice and the best way to see little bits of the city that you would miss otherwise, but it can be crowded with people on the weekends. Summer in South Korea is very humid and hot, so that's also something to take into consideration.

Hey Stevie, I'm just about to head home after a year in Korea. I enjoyed reading your pages, it reminded me of some of the fun things I've done this year. Cheers! Amanda

Seoul is such a great city, so modern and old at the same time. I hope North Korea has the same chance one day! Great page Stevie! ;)

Anyo! Your page rekindled all the warm feelings I have for the gentle people of Korea. Did you learn the Korean Game with the four wooden sticks ,Ut No Ri ( or at least that's how you pronounce it. It's no wonder I like you ...we're BOTH teachers .
