Quebec city is located on top of the cliffs of Cap Diamant. The city was discovered as a Iroquois site by Jacques Cartier, French Explorer, in 1534. Samuel de Champlain then founded Quebec City in 1608. The same site has been under siege for months by the British army until the ultimate battle of the Plaine d'Abraham where but the English army defeated the French and both sides lost their generals. (1759).
Despite 100 years of British domination (until the Confederation of 1867) and a minority status in Canada for the last century, the province and it's capital have preserved its french culture which you can notice in every aspects of the inhabitants life.
It's very high location overlooking the St-Laurent river made it very well protected from the surrounding.
The City is at at the point where the St-Laurent river starts to be very large so the view is magnificent ! Not to far from Quebec City, you can go to Tadoussac where boats bring you to on the river to do whale watching.
Official city of Quebec City
Quebec City is one of the oldest city in North America but its population is still under a million people. In 2008, the city will celebrate 400 years of history !
Being the capital of the province of Quebec the federal and provincial government have invested lots of money to protect it's landmarks like the 300 years old wall that made the city protected like a fortress, it's 150 year old castle, it's 300 years old citadelle which is still active as a militaary base and many other landmarks.
The city has kept a wonderful European feel and you can experience it in every street. The city is also full of history.
Quebec region tourist office
It is not uncommon for the joyful citizen of Quebec city to own a 300 years old rock house with triple chimney and 4-5 levels. The old town has been very well preserved, still has a residential purpose and resisted through multiple laws to become a tacky tourist destination.
The whole site has been declared a preserved site of UNESCO in 1985 !
Venture everywhere and discover the beautiful history of Quebec.
