The Crater Lake was created after Mount Mazama 12000 feet high, collapsed 7700 years ago. Later eruptions formed the island called Wizard island which can be seen on this picture.
The lake is 5 miles wide and the cliffs by it sides are almost 2000 feet high. It is one of the deepest lake in the world (1943 feet). Only a few expeditions got to explore its deepest point.
Human have lived on the sides of the lake for 10000 years. It has and still plays a mythic role in American Indian. Today, only one access to the lake is available where cruises our the lake (See related tips)
