The most famous of the slot canyons is just outside of Page. Antelope or "corkscrew canyon" was carved out of the rock by wind and water. The colors are astonishing, purple, blues, reds, oranges and yellows all in swirling rock. It's truly amazing to explore this phenomenon of nature. We visited the Upper canyon, known for it's shafts of light that come through narrow opening in the "ceiling". While doing my research, I found that there are 4 tour groups that take you into the canyon, all their tour times are staggered 1/2 apart from one another. I chose Antelope Canyon Tours, for the "photographers tour" it is a 2 hour tour and your guide tries to keep other tourists out of your shots. (something that I thought was worth some extra dough) Our guide was really wonderful and helpful, I highly recommend that tour group. I also advise sticking with him, as he really does keep the riff raff out of your shots, and he's the guy who knows when and where the beams come. In addition to Upper canyon there is also a Lower canyon (go figure) which is less crowded and a tad bit more difficult to navigate. Instead of a flat sandy floor that Upper has, you descend into the canyon by ladder (maybe we'll try that one next time!)
Before going on your tour, check the weather and with your tour guide. Flash flooding can turn the canyons into a death trap. In the 90's 14 people were killed while touring the Lower Canyon. They did not take heed of the warnings about the weather.
