Getting TO/AROUND: If you're driving to Newfoundland, you must take the Marine Atlantic car ferry to Port Aux Basques or Argentia. Argentia is closer to St. John's (81 miles/ 130 km) but it's seasonal. PAB is at the far southwest end of the island and is 571 miles (990 KM) to the city. You probably can't drive to St. John's from there in a day especially after a long overnight ferry voyage. There aren't that many highways and roads in Newfoundland, and the main highway network may have you driving a few hours out of your way to get to where you want to go.
You need reservations for the ferry and then there's a fair drive from the ferry to St. John's. See the website for maps and prices.
Fly and rent a car if you're going to St. John's especially off season.
