Off The Beaten Path: Commissariat House

    • Commissary house, restored to 1830 with period dressed staff inside to tell you about the restoration and life as it was there for the Commissary for the Fort William, situated nearby where the Hotel Newfoundland is now. It's only open during the main Tourist season but is a good view at a way of life over 175 years ago.

    • Walk across the grounds and gardens of Government House where the Lieutenant Governor of the Province resides. The large sandstone mansion is lovely, with large manicured lawns and flower borders. There's a greenhouse in behind and a 12 foot deep moat around the building. Huh? Apparently it is a snake pit. Excuse me??? Well apparently the plans for the building were mixed up with those for a similar mansion to be built in Bermuda and the *moat* keeps the snakes away. Must have worked because there isn't a snake to be found on the island of Newfoundland!!!

    Off The Beaten Path: Colonial Building

    • The Colonial Building used to be the legislature building where the representative Assembly met before Newfoundland joined Canada in 1959 and is now the Public Archives. It was completed in 1850. The arhives in this building now have some very interesting photos of the history of the city and the building which was badly damaged by riots in 1932.

    • There is a lovely little wooden church painted black and white which apparently was shifted off its foundation 6 inches in a gale back in the mid 1800's! They added side *wings* to stabilize it after that!

    • The Battery is a little "village" that follows the shoreline at the mouth of the St. JOhn's Harbour. It's houses are wooden and brightly painted and the narrow roads are twisting and winding along the edge of the rocky cliff.
    At the end of the battery you can get a good view of the mouth of the harbour or take the hiking trails right around the headland. No shops or restaurants, just a place for a little walk. There are a lot of hiking trails past there that take you around the steep hills below Signal Hill.

     every time i look at my guide book,i cant help reading about Newfoundland espicially St johns.i found your pics and your review to sum up what i thought, despite it being called a city its still has a certain charm.
