Vancouver

by tvor - last update: Nov 17, 2003

Vancouver is a large city on the west coast of Canada. It has one of the oldest Chinatown areas in North America and it has a fabulous mix of sea and mountains. It's large and sprawling with a group of connected cities in the Greater Vancouver area. I visited there near the end of April early May 2000, visiting some cousins and taking a couple of days to explore the city. I didn't get to see a whole lot of it but i quite enjoyed what i did see. The weather is far more mild on the West coast though tends to damp. Flowers are blooming earlier in the spring than on the east coast so my visit was colourful as well.

Vancouver is a very diverse city as well and it contains the largest Chinatown outside of San Francisco. When the national railway was being built in the 19th century, thousands of Chinese were brought over as cheap labour and settled on the west coast. The First Nation natives are well represented as well. Have a look at the art and totem poles, you'll be enthralled!

The Vancouver area was first discovered by Captain Cook in the 1700's and later became a center for fur trading and logging. It is not a very old city compared to some in Canada but it is a beautiful city and there is a lot to do and see, from major league sporting events to arts and entertainment to shopping and amazing natural parks and greenspaces to get away from the hustle and bustle. A bit expensive as most large cities are but well worth a visit.
