During my stay in Manchester in Sept. 2001, i took the train over to Liverpool for the day to meet up with a very good friend of mine who lives out in the Wirral. Liverpool is a large city who's most recent claim to fame is the home of the Beatles. I've never been a Beatlemaniac but since i was there i did have to check out Matthew Street where the Cavern Club was (is stiill but it's a newer one on the other side of the lane from the original site). Had to have a photo of me and John Lennon for posterity but i found the wall with the names of artists that have played i the cavern over the years carved into bricks far more interesting! |
| | So our game plan was just to walk around the city center, gawping at the lovely large buildings, getting the lay of the land. We took a tour in one of those amphibian vehicles that splashes down in Albert Dock which is a restored area on the waterfront, a group of old warehouses all done up for tourists. There's the Mersey, choppy and gray. It's a really windy day and looks like it can't decide whether to rain or clear up so we didn't take the ferry crossings.
We did walk down one street and i spied, up a narrow side street, an interesting looking building. Went a little closer and discovered a very old pub called Ye Hole in Ye Wall. I just *had* to go in and have a drink there!
We walked a lot. A lot. stopped at one point to have a Chinese meal and then walked some more. I really didn't go in any of the beautiful buildings but sometime i'll go back to have a good look through some of the museums and the Walker Art Gallery. |

DWARF-2 Thu Mar 17, 2005 21:59 UTC *Had* to look at this one, being born and bred there. Great to see you've walked around and seen some of the sites. There's plenty more - the Maritime Museum; a museum of local history - displaying the desks we used at school! | sandysmith Mon May 19, 2003 21:05 UTC you must come back there is so much to see! Ye hole in the wall is the oldest pub in 'Pool. (sandy from the Wirral!) | KennetRose Mon Mar 24, 2003 10:05 UTC The Hole in The Wall still going then? Thirty years ago they wouldn't have served you - it was Liverpool's last men-only pub! |
