Nightlife Spot: Royal Exchange
The Royal Exchange theatre, in St. Anne's Square in the city center, puts on really good productions. The building itself is the old Stock Exchange and the numbers board is still up on one end of the huge interior. As you walk in, the walls around your are lined with the box office and a couple of bars. In the middle, amid what looks like yellow scaffolding, is a big blue "pod". The stage is inside this and is a theatre in the round. The stage is on the floor and the seating rises around it, stadium style.
I've been there for productions of Ibsen and an amazing production of A MidSummer's Night's Dream, where the limitations of the stage were used imaginatively and effectively. Top class theatre in a beautiful and unique setting.
