The Opera Garnier isn't really off the beaten track but it's not always on the top of the tourist Must See list. However, it's very elaborate with paintings by Chagall. It was built in the 1870's under the rule of Napoleon III and there is a small museum in the building that was dirt cheap and had some interesting photos, paintings, costumes and scale models. Anyone that likes Opera or theatre would probably enjoy it.

What a great museum/gallery! I haven't been there yet but it's definitely on my list to go. This museum's main focus is Monet and the Impressionist/post Impressionists. It has the second largest collection next to the Musee d'Orsay. There's also a collection of First Empire furniture and objets and a collection of medieval illuminations. Entry is 6.50 euro for adults and it's closed Mondays. Not too far from the Muette Metro station but probably a doable walk from the Eiffel Tower towards the Bois de Boulogne.

This is the ultimate Paris museum because it's all about ... Paris! Located in the Marais district in 300 year old buildings, the museum includes decorative arts, paintings, sculpture, prints, maps, ruins and antiquities, all towards giving you an overview of the history of this city. Very good exhibit on the Revolution with loads of artifacts. Entrance to the Permanent collection is free. Near either the St. Paul or the Chemin Vert metro stop.

Off The Beaten Path: Espace Dali

Espace Dali isn't really that far off the Beaten Path, considering it's only around the corner from the busy tourist trap of Place du Tertre in Montmartre. It's an exhibition dedicated to Salvadore Dali and concentrates on his prints and sculptures. You won't see his paintings here. It's not a large space, but is very interesting even if Dali isn't your cup of tea. Most of the pieces and artwork are accompanied by explanations. Until December 31/07, There are also fashions by prominent world designers that were inspired by Dali. This small display is something unique and worth seeing. Cost is a little steep at 10 euro for an adult with discounts for seniors, students and children and is not covered in the Paris museum pass. It's only about 100 feet from Place du Tertre at the summit of Montmartre behind Sacre Coeur. You can climb there from the Abbesses or Lamark metro, or take the Montmartobus from Abbesses which will come close by. see the website for a better map.
