I currently live in Vicenza, a short train ride West of Venice. So, I am fortunate to be able to participate in some of the most diverse activities, both indoor and outdoor, that Italy has to offer.
I just spent my birthday celebrating with friends in Venice for Carnevale. A centuries-old festival, Carnevale is the Italian version of Mardi Gras- the last big party before Lent starts. The festivities last about 2-3 weeks prior to Ash Wednesday, ending with the biggest night on Fat Tuesday.
The costumes the Venetians wear are mostly based on medieval characters, ranging from the Doctor to the Witch... The more affluent Venetians participate in an extravegant fashion show in Piazza San Marco to show off these thousands-of-euro outfits. |
| | During Carnevale, and throughout the entire summer (until late October when the chill off the canals finally drive tourists away), expect large crowds. Hotel prices are high, and hostels are few & far between. Book EARLY no matter what time of year you'll be in Venice. |

| Pros: | "unique setting, great seafood, great day-trip location" | | Cons: | "expensive food/lodging, overly-crowded in high season, lack of lower budget accomodations" | | In A Nutshell: | "A must see, but don't plan on staying long!" |
