The city of thousands minarets

by Mongy - last update: Mar 16, 2003

Old Islamic Cairo quarter

The picture shows two of the famous mosques in cairo. Mosque of "Sultan Hassan", and Mosque of "Rifaei".
By the way this picture is not from internet, it is made by my friend Michal Charvat from Czech Republic who stayed one year in Egypt. For more of his pictures in Egypt and his adventure check: photo.source.cz
Sultan Hassan and Rifaei Mosques

The Citadelle

In side the citadelle, you feel your soul is lifted to the heavens. It is very cool place to visit during summer, birds are flying in circles in the mosque. Also very recommened to go there during the prayer time, the sound of the "Athan" (Call for the prayer) makes a very special heavenly atmosphere.
Cool opportunity to see how muslims are praying.

In Old Cairo

Cairo has many mosques, it was called the city of thousands minarets.
Cairo also has many churches, and the Old Coptic Cairo is a very soulful and "Must visit" place in Cairo.
Many of the mosques and churches can be visited by tourists, some not. For most of the mosques, the entrance of the women and the one for men is different. Also in many cases foreign women would have to wear a scarf when visiting the mosque, but not in the case of Mohamed Ali mosque in the citadelle.
