Having Central Park in the center of Manhattan is a stroke of genius. It is an immenslely large park, and provides a nice place to relax away from the noise of New York City.
It is also a great place to explore, especially on a nice summer or spring day. There is a lot do and see in Central Park, and you could spend an entire trip to New York just exploring it. It streteches for over 50 blocks from Columbus Circle to the border of Harlem and divides Manhattan into its East and West sides.
Within the park, there are maps all over the park that should help direct you to your location. If you get lost, there should be police around to help you. If you ever do get lost, I suggest heading in one direction so that you can get to the edge and figure out where you are.
Central Park is much safer than it was in the past, but I wouldn't advise traveling around in the middle of the night. I did once cross the park at about 4am, but I practically ran, it's really eerie to see the park completely dead and dark.
There is a lot do here. During the warmer months you can often find performances in different parts of the park. There are some castles to explore, and you can even rent a boat and paddle across one of the large lakes within. Not to mention, there are numerous Museums on the edges of the park.
