The small south Georgia town of Whigham is located halfway between Cairo and Bainbridge Georgia on US Highway 84. It is approximately 50 miles north of my hometown of Tallahassee, Florida. The last Saturday in January is the date that Whigham annually hosts the 'Rattlesnake Roundup". Hunters go out for days ahead of time, rousing hibernating rattlers from their dens and bring them into town. By noontime on Rattlesnake Roundup day, there can be literally hundreds of rattlesnakes on display. Prizes are given for the hunters bringing in both the biggest snake and the most snakes. Several times during the day, public information shows are given, demonstrating the rattlesnakes and discussing their position in the environment and their habits. If you are brave enough, you'll even be allowed to touch a rattlesnake or two, as it is held by one of the professional snake hunters. Anyway, THE reason to visit Whigham is to attend the Rattlesnake Roundup. Mark it on your calenders....the last Saturday in January....starts at 9:00 am sharp. The snakes are waiting!

The Whigham Rattlesnake Roundup is primarily about rattlesnakes. But, there is an underlying mission to discuss reptiles, and snakes in particular, of all kinds. There are demonstrations and lectures given on all types of snakes, both venomous and non-venomous. The roundup organizers say that, if they get the proper permits, that next year's event will have cobras, Gabon vipers and the like on the premises, in addition to the rattlers.

The Rattlensnake Roundup, like many other local fairs and gatherings throughout the South and America as a whole, features the usual collection of "fair food". Candied apples, popcorn, hot dogs, burgers, fries, etc. There are some items that are more geared towards the deep South, and you'll find them in abundance at the roundup. In fact, you might even find some french fried rattlesnake, although I've always found it way over-priced. And, if it really DOES taste like chicken, why not BUY chicken? :) Anyway, please check my "restaurant tips" for an eclectic tour of Rattlesnake Roundup food items. In the photo accompanying this tip, I've shown a deep South fair food mainstay, the "funnel cake". It's a glob of fried dough, somewhere between a pancake and donut in consistency. Most people put powdered sugar on them. They're tasty, but.......let's just say they're also kind of heavy in your gut. I'm getting a little old for funnel cakes. But, the lady who was holding this photographic specimen looked to be in her 70s. : ) Bon apetit!

TheWanderingCamel Mon May 7, 2007 14:52 UTC Great page! Just love these small town "dos" and you've done the Rattlesnake Roundup proud. Georgia's the only place I know where "war" becomes a three-syllable word. leyle | Yaqui Thu Apr 5, 2007 16:52 UTC I hate snakes and quite frankly I don't tolerate them roaming around near my house. Yet this is a wonderful page! Great photos and tips. | Nemorino Fri Sep 29, 2006 10:51 UTC This is just the kind of page I like! Lots of informative and entertaining details about something no one else has even been to or heard of.
