Restaurant Name: Festival Vendor(s) at the Rattlesnake Roundup
One of the tastier items that can be had at numerous stalls throughout the Rattlesnake Roundup are the country sausage dogs. These tasty sausages are similar in texture and makeup to a more traditional Italian or Polish sausage, but the country seasonings are different. Among the heavier flavors are sage and basil, along with a healthy dose of cracked black pepper. Be sure to get one with onions and bell peppers.
Favorite Dish: Sausage dog, with plenty of limp grilled onions and green peppers. Be sure to add some mustard. : )

Restaurant Name: More great vendor food at the Rattlesnake Roundup
Among the other delicacies for sale all over Whigham's Rattlesnake Roundup are Corn dogs, spiral potatoes and lemonade. As you'll note in the photo, the sign also says pork rinds, which some folks like, too. (I'm not a fan) A corn dog, for those not knowing, is a hot dog on a stick, dipped into a corn batter and then deep-fried. Dip it in mustard or melted cheese. Your cardiologist may stroke out, but it's damned good eatin' if you ask me. A spiral potato is basically like french fries, or more correctly "curly french fries". The point is that they try to cut a single potato into one large spiral and fry it. It tastes just like fries, but offers a more fun presentation. Add ketchup, salt and pepper. As for pork rinds, I'm not a fan. But if you want to know abou them, they're seasoned and deep-fried pork skins. Some people love them in the same fashion as they adore potato chips (crisps in the UK). For me, they're a little greasy, but plenty of rinds get sold without my participation. Lemonade is just good with about anything. It's more fun on a hot day in summer, but it has a nice place in January's Rattlesnake Roundup, too. And, it's a nice break from colas and the like.
Favorite Dish: I'm a big corn dog fan. When I was young, I lived in Texas......and Texas is THE home of the corn dog. These south Georgia versions are good, too.

Restaurant Name: In this case, it's a deli....but it always applies
In the deep South, and actually all over the world, the key phrase in obtaining a tasty meal are the words "home-made". If they didn't open up a bag of prepared, frozen food, preferring instead to make everything from basic ingredients, the chances are good that you're in for more of a treat.
Favorite Dish: They had a very nice "home-made" chicken salad.

Numerous vendors at the Rattlesnake Roundup: It's not everyday that you can taste an alligator

Restaurant Name: Numerous vendors at the Rattlesnake Roundup
They no longer serve fried rattlesnake at the Rattlesnake Roundup, due to the howling from the environmentalist corps. But, if you're looking for something unusual and distinctly rural southern to sample, try some fried alligator tail. In many areas, they'd just say "Gator tail", but at THIS vendor, they said alligator kabobs. The meat tastes somewhat like chicken, and is (in my opinion) a little chewy. But again, it's something different, right? And, if you're feeling guilty about eating this poor alligator, remember two things..... first, it is most likely meat from a sanctioned hunt. Alligator populations have exploded all over Florida, Georgia and Louisiana. The hunts keep the population at a healthy level. And second, that alligator would bite YOU if it had the chance. : )
Favorite Dish: I had a nibble of the gator tail, and it was fine. Like I said, I'm no aficionado for alligator meat. They had very good french fries here, too.

OK, I'm just being funny. But, I'm not completely kidding when I say that you should not make "fair vendor food" a steady diet. You'd end up looking like a whale, due to all the high calories of the fried fare being served. So, enjoy your day at the Rattlesnake Roundup, and be sure to try all the horribly-fattening but fun food. But for dinner, you might want to have a nice salad. : )
Favorite Dish: I didn't call these guys, as I ate more sensibly for my evening meal. : )

TheWanderingCamel Mon May 7, 2007 14:52 UTC Great page! Just love these small town "dos" and you've done the Rattlesnake Roundup proud. Georgia's the only place I know where "war" becomes a three-syllable word. leyle | Yaqui Thu Apr 5, 2007 16:52 UTC I hate snakes and quite frankly I don't tolerate them roaming around near my house. Yet this is a wonderful page! Great photos and tips. | Nemorino Fri Sep 29, 2006 10:51 UTC This is just the kind of page I like!
