Denali.....the GREAT one

The tallest mountain in North America is located within the boundaries of Denali National Park. In the early 20th century, this majestic peak was re-christened as "Mt. McKinley", after the assassination of President William McKinley.

No disrespect meant to our fallen President, but the local dialect name of Denali, meaning the "Great One" seems a better fit.

This peak has been conquered occasionally by bold climbers, but it remains, even in the 21st century, a torturous challenge to ascend. While numerous people have successfully scaled Denali, even more have died trying.

Pros and Cons

Pros:It has all that you need to survive...a few places to eat and sleep and friendly residents
Cons:You are definitely out in "the boonies". It's a long way to Wasilla or Fairbanks
In a nutshell:If you wish to visit Denali Park, and you should, Healy is the best place to stay
