Florence's Cottage: Your own little historic flat in Adelaide

  • Florence's Cottage is situated on a quiet side street (Ely Place) near vibrant Hutt Street. It was built back in 1882 for Police-Constable Bailey, and at the time was valued at £ 18.

Florence's is presently owned and managed by a wonderful lady, Anne Schioldan. The cottage has two bedrooms, a bath/shower, a full kitchen and a washing machine. In addition, there's a nice living room area complete with gas-burning fire place. There is a tiny little garden backyard where, if the weather is decent, you can hang any washed clothes out to dry.

Florence's kitchen is stocked with the basics, and Anne will add any reasonable specific requests. By basics, I mean breads, milk, butter, eggs, spices, cooking oils, cooking and eating utensils, cutlery, etc.

We made our own breakfast each day, and then chose from the local places for lunch and/or dinner. There's a small grocery store about three blocks away, where you can purchase additional items for your kitchen. (Wine, meats, cheeses, etc.)

Unique Qualities: Florence's is just.....for want a a better word.....charming. It's a historical little place that really gives you a peek at how life in Adelaide must have been back in 1882 when Constable Bailey moved in.

The day that we arrived in Adelaide, there was a nasty storm that had blown in from the Great Southern Ocean. It wasn't quite hurricane level, but the winds and rains literally howled that night. The little cottage was as cozy as you'd want...and the electric blanks and warm radiated heating system more than adequate for most of the cottage. (A note.... the bathroom can be a bit cool, although they do have one of those "heat lamp" things installed.) Let's just say that I got dressed pretty quickly upon completing my shower. : )

Another note.... the cottage is not handicap-accessible. The staircase to the upstairs bedroom is VERY narrow, very 19th century. One had best hang on to the rails tightly when going up or down. Carrying our heavy suitcase upstairs tested my manhood. ; ) Thankfully, even at age 48 (then), I passed. (see the photos below for a shot of the narrow and steep staircase)

IF YOU CONTACT ANNE AND CHOOSE TO STAY IN FLORENCE'S COTTAGE, please tell her that Pete and his family from Florida said hello.

Please see the previous tip for description. I placed an additional tip on Florence's Cottage just to share, more openly, what an interesting and cozy place it really was.

Let me sum up by saying there are plenty of places to stay in Adelaide. But for homey comfort, a friendly landlord and plenty of space....at a great price.... you cannot do better.

Unique Qualities: The point of this second tip stop is to share a series of photos. Please note the numerous photos below taken in and around Florence's cottage.

The Arab Steed Hotel (and Restaurant): A clean, simple hotel in eastern Adelaide

  • We didn't actually stay at the Arab Steed, but did enjoy a meal there. The folks who ran the place were very accomodating and friendly. And, I asked to peek at one of their rooms...

Nothing fancy, but they were clean and functional. And, you're in a good location... not right in the center of Adelaide, but only an easy walk away. And, there are several nice little local eateries and such in the immediate area. There's a laundromat right across Hutt Street from the Steed hotel, a good place to get your laundry back into order, especially if you've just come from the Outback.

Unique Qualities: A nice local place. GREAT FOOD in the dining room/pub. Especially nice schnitzels if you're into the German wonder. :)

The "proprietor" of the Arab Steed is SHAYNE WHITE. Shayne's email addy is shayne@arabsteedhotel.com.au, and his mobile phone number is (08) 0419 032 513

I agree with you--Adelaide would be my city of choice if I were to move to Australia. Love Melbourne, Sydney I could do without, but Adelaide has a very comfortable feel to it. Great tips, brings back memories of my visit there in 2001.

St Francis Xavier is the Catholic Cathedral on Wakefield Street, adjacent to Victoria Square in the city. Handy for any visitors who wish to attend Mass.

Excellent page! Seems to be a really nice city - wish we'd gone there when in Oz (but there's always next time, right?) The accommodation sounds a real find, as does the chocolate shop ;) And I always welcome a great beer tip!
