Green Arrows Guesthouse in Kyengera near Kampala

From March to April, 2007 I worked in a small food processing company in this small place just outside of Kampala, 12 miles from the city centre on the Kampala - Masaka road.
I stayed at the Green Arrows Guesthouse in the same location. I can really recommed this place for the friendlyness of its staff and the relatively modern and clean rooms.

Some details of my accomodation

It is a little difficult to get there from Kampala, but if you find a friendly taxi driver it is possible to reach the village of Kyengera, which is situated just on the first hill top after crossing the city boundaries. There you have to turn left at the big green arrow sign and then follow a mud road for a few hundred meters hill upwards.
The guesthouse consists of about 15 rooms, partly self contained. Breakfast is available always, other meals only on reservation and depending on the state of the nearby market.
There is no public transport available to and from the capital, but mini buses can be stopped on the highway (300 metres distance).

Things to do

Strolling around in the village of Kyengera - a place where tourists (and white people) are almost unknown - with simple clay huts, orchards, brick making facilities (huge outdoor ovens).
Seeing the sights (and traffic jams) in Kampala, including the Kings Tombs and the old harbour of Port Bell (with ferry ruins).
Starting point for weekend trips to the north (source of the Nile at Jinja) and to the south (Equator crossing, Lake Mburo national park with lots of animals - you do not need a zoom lens for your camera!)

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Clean rooms, friendly staff, fair price
  • Cons:Difficult access with public transport
  • In a nutshell:A nice starting place to explore a part of Uganda
