Three and a half days in Dallas - January '06

by OlenaKyiv - last update: Mar 20, 2006

Dallas, TX, from Reunion Tower
I visited Dallas for 3.5 days. I knew it is a large city so I tried to plan everything in advance what to see and on what day. I was walking a lot. When I came back to a hotel room late evening, my feet were on fire and demanded the rest. They [my feet] received what they wanted but only for the nighttime, because at 7 a.m. I started my next day of travel.

I appreciate great transportation in Dallas, especially trains. For a reasonable price I could have reached downtown and other places fast and easy.

My great memories:
- Museums
- West Village
(yey… I saw how reach people live)
- Old tram that goes to West Village and nice guy who told me a lot about restaurants and their famous owners
- Fair Park (it was lonely, but I was lucky to see meeting regarding opening a new building of science museum or something else, there was even television)

Unfortunately I was not able to be involved in some shopping. As I heard Dallas is the great place for stores. I think I will do it next time.

On my last day of travel I made a trip to Fort Worth. You are welcome to look my Fort Worth page as well.

A little of Dallas history

When I visit city I always interested in the history of its name. About Dallas I read on the first floor, near the entrance of the Sixth Floor Museum. There are about 5 or 6 posters with brief history and some photos. To be more precise in my narrative in the Chapter about Dallas history I also refered to Dallas Historical Society Web site

In 1839 one guy named John Neely Bryan came to Dallas area to look around, in 1841 he settled with his family in that area.

There are a lot of theories about the name of the city. It is known that Dallas County was named for George Mifflin Dallas , vice president of the United States at the time of annexation. However, all that is known about the origin of Dallas for the name of the city is that John Neely Bryan named it for "his friend, Dallas". The town was known as Dallas early in 1842. At that time, George Dallas was a practicing lawyer in Philadelphia. He had never been very far west, and Bryan had never been very far east, so it's doubtful they ever met.

There are several candidates for whom this friend might be:

1) Commodore Alexander Dallas, a brother of George, who was combating piracy in the Gulf of Mexico.

2)Walter Dallas, who fought in San Jacinto, or his brother, James, a former Texas ranger. After the war, they had received land grants in McLennan, Hill, and Burleson counties, which are close enough that Bryan might have know them.

3) Joseph Dallas who came to Cedar Springs in 1843, from Arkansas. It is assumed that they knew each other in Arkansas, and Bryan invited his friend to Texas.

Historical society says "the truth is that no one is sure whom Dallas is named for, and the answer will probably never be discovered."

Thanks to Trinity River and railroads development Dallas rapidly grew. Now it is a large city on the flat-flat land.
Old Red Court House and Tourist info Center inside

Tourist info center

I think I have to mention about tourist info center on my page, because I had hard time to find one. I asked Dallas residents, but nobody could give me directions. Of course I couldn't find it on the map because I didn't have it!!! Because I could find a map only in the tourist center.

Luckily I found the sign to tourist center in downtown near John Kennedy Memorial. The center is located inside of Old Red Court House located on the intersaction of Main St. and Houston St. on the first floor, entrance from Main St.
