Dar-es-Salaam
Dar-es-Salaam means "the Harbour of Peace" and has lived up to its name and allurement as one of the most informal and relaxed cities of the world. Here in the city people of different ethnic groups, races, religions and ideologies interact, mingle, socialise, inter-marry and live peacefully in the same neighbourhood and street.
Dar-es-Salaam is the country's chief port and commercial centre and remains the de facto seat of government as the newly designated capital of Dodoma 480 km to the west takes shape.
The bustling city of Dar-es-Salaam offers spectacular shopping streets, sightseeing areas and luxurious beach resorts.
Dar-es-Salaam is both a historical and modern city. Some buildings exhibit a strong colonial era architecture, while others bear the imprint of early Arab and eastern influence.
The beaches are expansive, idyllic and clean. There are several fine beach hotels and more luxury beach resorts offering sumptuous sea food, while facilities for water sports such as snorkelling, surfing, scuba-diving and big game fishing are constantly being improved. The small, uninhabited Mbudya Island, about 3 km offshore, continues to be a leading centre for water-skiing.
Dar-es-Salaam's night life is vibrant. The centrally located Club Billicanas offers music and live cabaret and houses the lively Hard Rock Cafe with its computerised laser music system and giant videa walls open 24 hours a day. There is Las Vegas Casino and the adjecent California Dreams Night Club
