Ruaha National Park

by Yussuf - last update: May 5, 2003

The Great Ruaha River begins as a series of clear mountain streams in the Soutern Highlands of Tanznai before developing into an extremely beautiful and important feature of one of the largest and wildest Game Parks in the World.

Ruaha National Park, among Tanzania’s varied and famous National Parks, is the second largest covering 10,000 km2. This vast wilderness is rich in wildlife and contains a wide variety that includes Greater and Lesser Kudu, Roan and Sable Antelope, huge herds of Elephant and Buffalo and an abundance of bird life. Over 465 bird species have been sighted within the Park. The exciting Great Ruaha River features large numbers of Hippo and Crocodile. In the dry season the river attracts great quantities of game including Lion, Leopard, Hunting Dog and numerous other species such as Waterbuck, Impala, Giraffe, Warthog and Eland, while Grant’s Gazelle, Ostrich and Cheetah may be seen on the plains. Ruaha National Park, from a game enthusiasts point of view, offers a paradise of the outstanding natural world.

The landscape changes from river valley to hill ranges through to vast stretches of plains, the escarpment and to gently undulating land with rocky kopjes. Dry bush county dotted with ancient Baobab is intersected by sand rivers lined with leafy Acacias, Figs and Tamarinds while the uplands in the interior are thickly wooded with the colourful Miombo. Magnificent Flora and Fauna abound.

The special attraction of Ruaha, aside from the spectacular scenery is its unspoilt wilderness. The park is comparatively unknown and only recently developed for tourists.
