The 1.5-million Novosibirsk is the third largest city of Russia (after Moscow and St.Petersburg) and the chief city of Western Siberia (see the map). Born in 1893 as a future site of a railroad bridge crossing the great Siberian river Ob where the latter is crossed by the famous Trans-Siberian Railroad (built in 1890s - 1900s), it oficcialy became a town in 1903.

Novosibirsk

After its foundation in 1893 and until 1926, Novosibirsk was called Novonikolayevsk. Even if you do not know Russian, it is not difficult to guess the meanings of the two names. The original name refers to Nicolas II (Nikolay II Alexandrovich Romanov), the last Emperor and Sovereign of Russia the Great, the Little and the White, the Grand Duke of Finland, the Tsar of Poland etc etc etc. In 1926, "by the demand of the people", it was renamed. All the names of the revolutioners have alread been taken, so that the name Novosibirsk ("New Siberia") naturally came up.

Novosibisrk

The major part of the photos is the family. However, a part, for the monuments of the city, comes from the Book " Novosibirsk - photoalbum " (Svet editions - ISBN 5-8124-0012-1), or of post cards. There are 40 kilometers in Akademgorodock and Novos, and I don't go there often. Thanks for info. I visited novosib last autumn, i did n't like it, it is so different from Europe it shocked me. I prefer Novokuznetsk, South Siberian Capital, it seems me more human oriented then cities like Novosib or Moscow.
