Voltaire acheta une maison près de Genève qu'il nomma « Les Délices » et en 1758, il acheta le Château de Ferney.

Voltaire bought a house close to Geneva that he named «The Delights» and in 1758, he bought the Castle of Ferney.



Voltaire changea sa propriété en une ferme productive. Il acheta les meilleurs outillages agricoles et engagea des gens pour travailler à la ferme. Il fit aménager un verger et planter beaucoup d'arbres.

Voltaire changed his property in a productive farm. He bought the best agricultural toolings and hired people to work at the farm. He made to arrange an orchard and to plant a lot of trees.

La ville se trouve à la frontière suisse et fait partie de l'agglomération de Genève, sur le bord nord-ouest de l'aéroport international de Genève. Elle est située sur la RN 5 qui relie Genève (et au delà la rive française du Lac Léman) à Dijon en passant par le col de la Faucille.


The city is at the Swiss border and is part of the agglomeration of Geneva, on the side northwest of the international Geneva airport. It is situated on the RN 5 that joins Geneva (and to the delà the French strand of the Lake Geneva) in Dijon while passing by the collar of the Sickle.

Aujourd'hui encore, le statut de zone franche témoigne de l'importance et de l'extrême fragilité de la frontière dans le Pays de Gex, qui ne fut intégré au Royaume de France qu'en 1601 par le traité de Lyon.
