L'essentiel du patrimoine artistique de Rabastens se trouve dans la vieille ville comprise entre les promenades et le Tarn : le quartier du Château, aux rues étroites et tortueuses autour du Plô des Chevaliers, le Bourg dont les ruelles coupent à angle droit la Grand'Rue (rue P. et G. Gouzy), témoin de l'urbanisme du XIIIe siècle. En y flânant, vous découvrirez les vieilles maisons à pans de bois des XVe et XVIe siècles, les belles maisons de briques des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles.

Les origines

Les origines de Rabastens demeurent obscures. Selon un manuscrit aujourd'hui disparu mais consigné au XVIIe siècle, ce serait à Pépin le Bref que Rabastens devrait son existence, ce qui placerait sa fondation en 767, lors du passage de Pépin dans notre région, après la soumission de Toulouse.
Or, dans les années 1970, le groupe d'Étude et de Recherche Archéologique a fouillé à l'emplacement d'une villa gallo-romaine, située à 1 km au nord de la ville. Couvrant plusieurs hectares et ayant regroupé plusieurs centaines d'habitants, elle se place parmi les plus vastes et les plus fastueuses villas de la région.
