Heavenly Greece

by sbenedec - last update: Jul 21, 2003

Delphi, Greece Sept 2001
Greece is immense, with many islands, many moods. I was so moved by the friendly, loving Greek people. Exploring ancient cities and monuments I could almost hear, smell and see that first Olympic athletes competing.

There is much of Greece I must explore, and will do so in the future. Places in Greece I haven't been, but plan on seeing, are Santorini, Mykonos, just to name a couple!

We visited Athens, Delphi, Olympia, and Hydra.

It was memorable, and we can't wait to go back!
Hydra, Greece, Sept 2001

The Island of Hydra

Taking a day sail out of Athens, we spent the day hopping around some islands, one of which was Hydra (pron. "eedruh"). It was a brutally hot day, which made it perfect! We wandered down the side streets, exploring, and dining on the waterfront, shopping and relaxing on this wonderful stop. It was a perfect day.

Athens - Big, Noisy, Beautiful

We loved Athens! It was just as you might imagine - crazy traffic, loud people, shoppers everywhere, and magnificent whether. Spending the afternoon at the Acropolis, you'll look down across a sea of buildings. It is absolutely huge.

The Acropolis is high, and steep, and they don't warn you beforehand, but the stones can be slick and difficult to walk over. I wore hiking boots, and thank goodness. People who weren't wearing good shoes had a tough time. The wind was quite high on the mountain too. It was wonderful, standing on the mountain and imagining what it must have been like thousands of years ago when the temples were first built. I can't wait to go back and explore some more. We only had 5 days in Athens, and it wasn't enough. The airport is brand new, clean and beautiful, but a very long way from town.
