The cliff

Stevns Klint - The cliff
The cliff is 15 km long and 41 meters high. It is an impressive sight as the cliff rises straight up from the see and then ends at the flat fields of the surrounding area. On clear days you can see Sweden and Øresund Bridge from the top of the cliff.

The cliff consists of limestone from the oldest tertiary age (63 – 65 million years old). There is also some chalk made in the youngest tertiary age.

The limestone and chalk was deposited here, when the crayfish that lived in the see that covered Denmark at the time died and fell to the bottom of the sea. The landslides that continue to happen here make sure that the cliff is always looking bright white and not get covered in plants.
Højerupold church

Højerup old church

Højerup Old Church was built of chalk ashlars 1250-1300. At that time it stood at a safe distance from the cliff. The legend says that the church moves a cock-stride inland each Christmas night. This wasn’t enough to avoid disaster: in 1928, the chancel and part of the cemetery plunged into the sea as a result of the damage of time on the cliff.
For security reasons, it had already been closed in 1910.

The remainder of the building is thoroughly secured today, and once a year - the second Tuesday of August - a popular evening of music and singing is held there.

View from the church

The atmosphere of the church is great and so is the views.
