Travelling is living

by metteks - last update: Jul 27, 2009

Antigua, Guatemala
My travel-homepage: http://www.metteks.dk

My name is Mette, and I am 31. After 8 years in Copenhagen, I now live in Kolding, Denmark. I work as a schoolteacher here.

I really love traveling. Sometimes it is the only thing I can think about, then it helps a little, but only a little to work on my homepage or at my pages here at VT. Sometimes it doesn?t help, I just get more frustrated and want to travel more.

How I like to travel

When I travel I like the local stuff. I take local busses in stead of pricey air-conditioned tourist busses, I eat local food at street corners (and have never gotten sick from that) and I stay in the cheapest family run places I can find.
I don?t like the idea about flying between mayor towns, just to see the sights that all tourists see, and nothing else.

I don?t like to follow other tourists in a big group, and only does so, if I have to. I like to experience the locals, see how they live and what they do. I like going to small villages where there is no tourist sights and nothing to do, but to relax or walk around and observe the locals. This gives me many great experiences and is a cheap way of traveling too.

My travel History

My first real holliday outside my own country was to Iceland and The Faeroe Islands when I was 14 with my parents. After this trip followed a lot of holydays with my parents and quite a number of trips with my schools.

Then I finished the gymnasium and I went to Australia where I lived and worked on two fruit farms for 9 months.

Back home I started studying at university, but after 1? years I had have enough. So I worked hard, saved up some money and went to Latin America for 7 months. Here I re-learned Spanish, was a volunteer at a rainforest of Ecuador and traveled all the way to Mexico.

Now a days I still travel, but not that far away and not for so long time. I stay in Europe, but I still long for unusual places, where not so many tourists go, and have recently been to Croatia, Slovenia and Bulgaria.

Most recent trip

I went to Uganda, Africa with my parents and siblings in July 2007. My dad works there as a consultant for a big farmer 4-5 times a year and he invited us to see the farm and the country. It was my first time to Africa and was fantastic. I love South America and didn't think that Uganda would touch me as deep, but it did. The landscape and wildlife was great and the people were so kind, and the little kids running along the roads smiling, waving and yelling hello were so cute. I hope I can go back in the near future.

The future

For the first time in years I don't have any travel plans. A year ago, my boyfriend and I bought a house/former farm in the countryside near Kolding. We have used the last year to completely restore the house, and we are not yet finished. The setting is fantastic and even though we do not yet live there, we absolutely love the place.
It is next to the fields, close to a little village and next to a little forest, form where the deer visit our garden.
It isn’t travel adventure, but still it is a great ride.
