Avoid the trains late at night. Its not safe to travel on some of the Suburban RER trains. Also the Main Metro line (No. 1) between La Defense and Chateau de Vincennes is a favourite for pickpockets. The line is the most modern with one continuous/connected train. So one can see all the way down the train, making it somewhat safer. A ticket costs 1.50 euros while a carnet of ten tickets is cheaper to purchase at 11.10 euros. www.ratp.fr. discover Paris/t + ticket/fares. Wherever tourists gather, there you will find thieves. Avoid Mc Donalds if at all possible You can also tell the locals from the tourists. The ladies sit with their handbag/purse strap wrapped securely round their wrist, when sitting by the exit door.
