Bernau is a small, lovely town in Land Brandenburg, considered by some as a suburb of Berlin, but by others as a village in itself. And one can certainly look up more direct information at its very nice website here, The City of Bernau.
A pleasant train ride, not too far from the center of Berlin. The weather was extremely pleasant for this special outing: a medieval festival, a Hussitenfestspiele complete with mock battles, men in full armour, ladies arrayed in long-skirted and tapestried finery. The festival began with a parade of the minstrels, warriors, troubadors, mock "royalty" with all their lords and ladies-in-waiting marching down a central street as locals leaned out of windows to watch the proceedings.
Business still went along as usual, but everyone knew this day was one to take some moments to marvel at the dedication of those whose hobby and, in some cases, lifestyle to dress and live as ones did hundreds of years ago. And so the "opening ceremonies" involved town leaders to come out, the uniformed guardsmen and women in their blue jackets with red trimmings, their helmets with the spike on top, and their guns.
My friend eagerly marched also with longbow on his back, I carried his cloak. I never thought to be part of such a procession, though I have taken part in very many pow-wows, or Native American celebration/gatherings, and though I also have a great interest in armour, swords, medieval history and military tactics because of the type of books I write, I have to learn such things. We had an absolutely beautiful day in this little burg!

That all looks like a lot of fun - and a good page about it. I think the group doing this in Australia is called the 'Society for Creative Anachronism'.
Fascinating info on medieval archery. Thanks for some tips on one of the few states I've not yet visited in Germany. I've been to Berlin, but Brandenburg is officially its own separate state outside of the city.
It's so close, but I've never been to Bernau... Hope all is well!
A whole other side of Bernau! I was sent there shortly after the wall came down to do a teachers' workshop, and their main concern was coming out of the GDR trauma. Glad to see some different and interesting things are going on there now.
