Spectacular Vistas

The province of Ontario's 'cottage country' (the northern areas that are accessible within a couple hours' drive of the cities) is quite vast with several distinct areas: Georgian Triangle, Muskoka Lakes, Algonquin Park, Haliburton Highlands, Kawartha Lakes, etc.

Each area is unique and draws a characteristic 'set'. The Muskoka Lakes have become quite populated with upscale homes and bustling summer towns. Algonquin Park development is restricted, amenities are far between, but the campgrounds and rental cottages are often overbooked.

Just south of Algonquin Park in the area surrounding such towns as Haliburton and Dorset, lie the Haliburton Highlands. West of there (Bracebridge) the land is flatter, but Haliburton stands out for its um.. Highlands. A drive through Haliburton is winding and hilly with the roads cut out of the granite to even things out. Small glassine lakes are tucked into the forest and, with Algonquin Park just a short drive north, Haliburton makes for a great alternative to rent a cottage. The towns are not congested with tourists in the summer. The fall leaf colours are spectacular, especially when you can so easily see the valleys just by driving (no climbing involved).
