Rowing Club "Galeb"

Rowing Club "Galeb" is founded in 1928 at the riverside of the Danube and through all its history it was the place of great fun and hard work. Excellent results brought us rowing club "Galeb" the top of Serbia and Montenegro and Balkan rowing sport.

Today, Rowing Club "Galeb" has over a hundred members but this number constantly grows.

Zemun beach "Lido"

Through the whole XIX century space of Major war island had mostly agricultural assignment. Though after the end of I World war beach had been arranged, which soon get character of one of the most beautiful river’s beaches in Europe together with earlier arranged Vienna’s Genzenhojfel. Beach experienced its golden era in decade before I World war. Well arranged and daily cleaned, equiped with all neded objects was famous far away and place on which people of Belgrade envyed to their neighbours.

Long after the war, popular Lido hadn’t been used, and planners even decided to demolish island for needs of building New Belgrade in 1948.

That would have been successful if Danube didn’t start to bring much more sand then dredgers could raise so this idea was receded. Not long after that beach on island became the most pleased place of people in Zemun in the summer time.

Or Veliko ratno ostrvo in Serbian. The island marks the mouth of the Sava as it empties into the Danube. Throughout the history, the island was an important strategic point either for the conquest or the defence of Belgrade. Even before the war in 1788 citizens of Zemun had been farming the land on island and fishermen had their cottages where they inflected during the storms. In time of the first serbian mutiny in december 1806 and january 1807 gunmen of Karadjodje fired Belgrade from the island with tacit acceptance of Zemun’s military commander.

Today, the Veliko ratno ostrvo is colonized by nature lovers. The island and the waters around are home of numerous rare species including endangered birds, but also a morphologically and geologically extremely interesting area.

Football club "Zemun"

Sport in Zemun has long history. First ball in Zemun appeared in 1904 during the summer school vacation and it was brought by pupils who studied in some of biger cities in Austria-Hungary empire. Gimnasium’s teacher of mathematics and gymnastics Djordje Gavrilovic Brought in 1912 real ball to his pupils and explained them rules of the game.In 1913 started first exibitions between school classes and in the same year was founded Zemun’s SK ”Tango”. Between wars, in Zemun had been working dozen football clubs among which were the best : Sparta,which came into first league and also ZASK and Vitez while rest of teams (Gradjanski, Trgovacka omladina and german Eintracht) were weaker. After the II world warmain role in football was took of by Jedinstvo which changed its name later, first into Galenika and then into Zemun.

Today FC Zemun in first league and have good resultats.

It's interesting that club colours are green-blue. During a last 10 years this become official colours of Zemun city.
