In my opinion, DC is a must see for anyone, whether you've lived in the US for a long time, or whether you are travelling here for the first time. There is so much history here and there are some very nice architecture, monuments, and memorials. You can learn a lot about our country by visiting all the museums and various memorials. As an American, it is a good way to refresh your knowledge of our history.

I've been to DC several times in the past and did all of the typical tourist stuff you do on a weekend. Now that I am living in Northern Virginia, however, I hope to get to DC and see all the other things I missed. There's plenty to do so I won't be running out of things to do any time soon!

The typical weekend thing to do is all the monuments/memorials at the mall, view the White House & Capitol building from outside, couple of the museums, and Arlington National Cemetery. With more time, you could check out more of the museums, get a tour of the White House or Congress (may need to reserve in advance), see the memorials off the mall, and see other things like the botanical gardens and the zoo.
