Peddlers

There are several peddlers that walk along the beach, selling homemade buns and pastries (pasteles, empanadas, tortas fritas, bolas de fraile)... Usually they are young people, carrying a basket or a trolley; do not miss the delicious experience of tasting their products!!! (I highly recommend pasteles de dulce de membrillo).

Hay varios vendedores ambulantes que recorren la playa, vendiendo comida casera (pasteles, empanadas, tortas fritas, bolas de fraile)... Habitualmente se trata de jóvenes que llevan una canasta o un carrito; no te pierdas la deliciosa experiencia de probar sus productos!!! (Yo recomiendo especialmente los pasteles de dulce de membrillo).

Take the chair

A beach at Costa de Oro looks like a chair exhibition: everybody takes a beach chair, to be more comfortable, and have a better look of the other people!

Una playa en la Costa de oro parece una exposición de sillas: todo el mundo lleva una silla de playa, para estar más cómodo y poder ver mejor a los demás veraneantes!

Talking about names

Usually, people give their beach houses a name... so you do not know the people's adress, but the name of the house where they live. Some of the houses have obvious names like "My Dream", "Sea and Sun", "Sun Park", "In Front of the Sea", "Friends", or more original ones like "Valium 10". But the most common custom is creating a name with the initials or the first letters of the names of each member of the family, so the result are names like "Jucamar", "Monikiko" or the incredible "Anacarandalagas".

Habitualmente, la gente les pone nombre a sus casa de playa... así es que no conoces la dirección de la gente, sino el nombre de la casa en la que vive. Algunas casas tienen nombres obvios como "Mi Sueño", "Mar y Sol", "Parque del Sol", "Frente al Mar", "Los Amigos", o nombres más originales como "Valium 10". Pero la costumbre más común es crear un nombre con las iniciales o las primeras letras de los nombres de cada miembro de la familia, que dan como resultado nombres tales como "Jucamar", "Monikiko" o el increíble "Anacarandalagas".

Where the streets have no name

The Interbalnearia is the highway which goes through the Costa de Oro; when you go along it from Montevideo to East, on your right hand you will find signs which say the name of the different beaches, and the roads that lead you to them. Inside each one of the spas, usually the streets have no name, but numbers: Calle 1, Calle 2... But sometimes the main street of the place has a "proper" name, and it usually is the name of the founder.
At Cuchilla Alta, some of the streets have the name of the Uruguayan departments (but some others, have numbers!)

La Interbalnearia es la ruta que atraviesa la Costa de Oro; cuando se toma por ella, saliendo de Montevideo y en dirección al Este, a mano derecha encontrarán carteles indicando los nombres de los balnearios y los caminos de ingreso a ellos. Dentro de cada uno de los balnearios, habitualmente las calles no tienen nombre, sino número: Calle 1, Calle 2... Pero algunas veces la calle principal del lugar tiene nombre "propio", y habitualmente es el nombre del fundador.
En Cuchilla Alta algunas calles tienen los nombres de los departamentos del Uruguay (pero otras tienen números!)
